Torre d’Oro
The squad’s highest honour. Those who receive it join the Council of the Golden Towers — for exceptional merit, never for seniority.
Since 1964
Sixteen throwers like the pieces of one chess side, black and white, and an orange rook on the back. Sixty years of Carnival.

1964 is the founding year, though a year earlier a group of friends and schoolmates had already come together to live the three days of the Carnival of Ivrea. Their only badge, beyond a shared pair of work overalls, was a round shield drawn at the centre.
Their first throwing ground was Via Arduino, an uphill stretch with more carts to push than carts to throw at. From 1965 the squad opened to everyone: what held it together was enthusiasm, and the fact that none of its members had ever thrown for another team.
The shields gave way to a black-and-white checkered jersey. The name Scacchi(“chess”) comes from there: there were sixteen throwers, like the pieces of one chess side — and among them a king, a queen, knights, rooks and pawns were chosen, each with a role. The black and white came from a fondness for a famous football club.
The symbol on the back belongs entirely to Ivrea: the tower of its Castle, whose red towers crown the old town. Orange, like the oranges we throw.
1st prize — Carnival
1st prize — Palio degli Aranceri
The squad’s highest honour. Those who receive it join the Council of the Golden Towers — for exceptional merit, never for seniority.
For those who have thrown with the Scacchi for eight years: awarded in the square, on Carnival Sunday, to trumpets and drums.
Since 2003, to the fiercest throwers in the square — where actions count.
The Scacchi are made of many groups, each with its corner of the square, its flag and its character.

A chapter from the past
In 1981, to truly test themselves against the other squads, the Scacchi built a throwing cart of their own: a castle with four towers, in white, black and orange, with hand-made masks. “La Compagnia della Forca” went down in Carnival history — feared and respected — and earned the Trofeo Endas from the on-foot squads, the prize for the most combative. Today we keep it as memory.
Today we are at home in the old town, on Ivrea’s oldest street, under the same tower we wear on our jerseys: Via 4 Martiri. A place to show the trophies, share a plate of pasta and come by to sign up.
